1979
The world witnessed the debut of a slick new handheld vacuum: the dustbuster®.
Developed by BLACK+DECKER as an alternative to bulky conventional vacuums, the new “electric dustpan” sold over a million units when it hit the market; setting the record for highest per-unit sales.
1985
The handheld market numbered close to 7 million annually, of which 85% was BLACK+DECKER.
1995
The Smithsonian acquired a 1979 dustbuster®, and placed it in their electrical collection at the National Museum of American History.
By this time, an estimated 100+ million units of dustbuster® had been sold.
2009
The original 1979 dustbuster® was covered in the prestigious "Catalyst" case study by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) to illustrate the power of design in achieving commercial success, and effecting positive change in the marketplace.
IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE
Yes, the dustbuster® has its roots in space exploration technology. The seeds were sowed during an Apollo-era partnership with NASA, when battery-operated, portable tools had to be built for lunar exploration.
Today, the original dustbuster® resides in the National Museum of American History, near Thomas Edison's early light bulbs, and Alexander Graham Bell's first telephone.
